Tropical cyclone birth predicted with supercomputer

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA's Terra satellite captured Cyclone Nargis in early May 2008. At its most intense point, the Category 4 storm, later simulated by Shen's model, boasted winds of 130 mph before coming ashore in Myanmar on May 2, 2008. Predicting whether or not a storm system will grow into a hurricane is difficult.  But a new supercomputer model has taken a leap forward in this effort.

Asteroid could threaten Earth in 2182

Researchers speculate that a giant asteroid smashed into Earth 65 million years ago, creating the Chicxulub crater off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, as shown in this artist's conception. The asteroid 1999 RQ36 is smaller than the Chicxulub asteroid but could still cause widespread devastation if it were to hit Earth.A large asteroid in space that has a remote chance of slamming into Earth would most likely hit in 2182, if it crashes into our planet at all, a new study suggests.
